Former Residence of the Kihara Family

Early Edo period townhouse located in Shiraichi, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan

The Former Residence of the Kihara Family is an early Edo period machiya (merchant’s townhouse) located in Shiraichi, a town located in the low hills northwest of JR Shiraichi Station. It is known as one of the oldest machiya in Japan.
Built in 1665, it is now designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Kihara family, which prospered during the Edo period, were known for their involvement in sake brewing and for salt production in Takehara. Today, only the main house, a storehouse, a well, the remains of the sake brewery, and part of the garden remain.
