Higashihiroshima City Museum of Art
The oldest municipal art museum in the prefecture, serving as an artistic hub that supports regional culture
The Higashihiroshima City Museum of Art, opened in 1979 as a hub for local artistic and cultural activities, is the oldest municipal art museum in Hiroshima Prefecture.
In 2020 it was relocated to the culture zone in Saijo-cho, near Saijo Sakagura-dori Street and the Higashihiroshima Arts & Culture Hall “Kurara.” The doors and transoms from the 1st floor exhibition room of the old museum building, which had been relocated there from the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum by Hiroshi Okubo of Kurose-cho during the construction of the old museum, have now been relocated to the south entrance of the new museum building.
The museum is continuously acquiring new works for its collection, which focuses on “Modern and Contemporary Prints,” “Contemporary Ceramics,” and “Local Works.” The museum also conducts a wide range of activities to promote local arts and culture, including lectures and workshops related to exhibitions, museum lectures and explanations of artwork by curators, art appreciation programs, and cooperation with school classes.
